Folks, it’s time to get weird. At 4:41pm EST on the 24th of January, we have a new moon heralding the beginning of Aquarius season. Aquarius energy is intellectually curious (read: nerdy), eclectic, humanitarian, a little mysterious, full of original ideas, and the ultimate revolutionary when things need to change. Aquarius energy can also be overly eccentric, uncompromising, pretentious and highly aloof, cold, insensitive and detached despite caring so deeply about humanity.

Now is an important time to find a balance between social time and alone time. Aquarius energy is fairly social, but does not do well with feeling pushed or suffocated. Mars being currently in Sagittarius is another dynamic that does not do well with feeling confined.

The combination of new moon energy and Aquarius energy necessitates a good amount of intentional, reflective alone time… however, this week’s sextile of Venus and Jupiter brings some extra friendliness and collaborative energy onto the scene. Your individual ideal balance of social vs. alone time will differ from someone else’s, so put some intention into figuring out what that looks like for you in these next few days.

With the reflective tone of the new moon, this is a perfect moment to take time to assess what needs to change. This can be something like a personal habit or two, but Aquarius energy really inspires us to think bigger and identify larger systems that need to go (or at least be reformed.) ‘Tis the season to fight oppression as it ravages the wellbeing of people and planet, to learn to be more inclusive of others, to perhaps make lifestyle changes with big, global impact. Aquarius is big social justice warrior energy- don’t look at me, I didn’t make the rules.

Mercury is in Aquarius alongside the sun and moon, making us a little more curious and able to both think and speak outside the box. Progressive, inspired Aquarius energy serves the purpose of helping us create a better future, but sometimes needs some grounding in order to create and stick to a game plan. For me personally (as someone with an Aquarius sun, rising, Mercury and Saturn), journaling, making lists and putting things down on paper is crucial for organizing, developing and acting on my boldest new ideas.

To provide a nice contrast to all this Aquarius energy, Venus currently finds itself in Pisces. This transit helps bring softness and sensitivity into all our relationships, balancing Aquarius’s blunt aloofness. Venus in Pisces helps us all to be more interpersonally loving, but has the downfall of obscuring boundaries. Remember that if you need to maintain a certain level of distance with someone for whatever reason, now is not the time to second-guess that. Maintain your perspective and clarity around when it’s time to walk away or let go, and if a relationship dynamic feels safe and healthy, lean into the potential for sweet connectedness.

Lastly, the sun forms a sextile with Chiron this week- an aspect all about finding purpose and passion in your karmic destiny. Notice if digging into your uniqueness and tuning into the curiosity, inspiration and passion of Aquarius season helps you to get a clearer sense of why you’re here.

Now is a time to shed our collective fear of change and the unknown, and to let go of- or even topple over- what’s meant to fall. Allow yourself to see how it feels to really shine in your own quirky weirdness. Above all, Aquarius energy is here to shake us out of being complacent and apathetic about big things that matter.

Three ways to celebrate this new moon:

1) Pencil alone time into your schedule and make it meaningful. Let there be a reflective element to it, allowing freshness and new ideas to permeate the parts of your development that have been feeling stuck

2) Try something new, ideally something with a humanitarian component to it. This time of year is when we start to see stagnancy pop up (Ayurvedically, kapha season is soon to begin) and Aquarius energy is here to break up that stagnancy. Follow what makes you feel inspired

3) Connect to your heart. With Aquarius energy, it can be hard to feel connected to the emotional realm- depending on your own astrological chart, this may be more or less of a challenge for you. Do a heart chakra meditation to tune into what’s going on in there
